The Seabees primary roles have been building bases, airstrips, roadways as well as many other construction projects in both combat and non-combat. The proud history of the Seabees dates back to their creation during World War II. The Seabees operated in every combat zone but are most known for their service in the Pacific Theater. Landing along side or right after the initial invasion force the Seabees conducted all sorts of projects critical to the landing and occupation. They often operated under fire and often took part in the fighting. The Seabees were critical to the island hopping campaign in the Pacific. They built airstrips, piers, oil storage tanks and other essential structures that helped with the War. Like most of the military the Seabees were drawn down after World War II but the forces were built up again for the Korean War. The Seabees participated in the Inchon Landings and operated in Korea for most of the war. The Seabees operated extensively in the Vietnam War, building Special Forces bases and operating along side the US Marine Corps for much of the war. The Seabees have operated and continued to operate in Iraq and Afghanistan in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
