The first action the division would see was when it landed at Omaha Beach the day after D-Day in 1944. The division fought through France, Belgium and Germany for almost a year until the German surrender in May 1945. After the war the 2nd Infantry Division was returned to the United States and stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington. With the start of the Korean War the division was quickly assembled and moved to Korea. The division was the first from the United States to arrive in Korea and was used to help the defenses around the Pusan Perimeter. The division was part of the break out of Pusan Pocket and the march up the peninsula. The division served on the line in Korean until the Armistice in July 1953. After the war the division was returned to the United States but after over 10 years the division was again returned to South Korea and part of the division is still stationed there. The rest of the division is stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington. The division has deployed regularly to both Iraq and Afghanistan in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
